A Regional Hub for Endourology Training
and Advanced Urological Care
The West African Center of Excellence in Modern Urology (WACEMU) represents a transformative initiative to address the critical shortage of minimally invasive urological services in West Africa. Located in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and led by Dr. Ouima Justin Dieudonné ZIBA, WACEMU will serve as a regional hub for endourology training, advanced patient care, and clinical excellence.
To advance urological care in West Africa by establishing a center of excellence that provides comprehensive endourology training, delivers high-quality minimally invasive urological services, and fosters regional collaboration to improve patient outcomes across the sub-region.
- Establish a fully equipped endourology training center with state-of-the-art equipment
- Train 100+ urologists and surgical teams in minimally invasive techniques over five years
- Provide advanced urological care to 2,000+ patients annually
- Create a sustainable regional network connecting West African urological centers
- Reduce surgical morbidity and improve patient outcomes through modern techniques
Evidence from continental surveys and systematic reviews reveals:
- 60% of African centers lack adequate training in endoscopic management of benign prostatic hyperplasia, the most common urological condition requiring surgical intervention [1]
- Only 23% of Nigerian urologists perform percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) routinely, and just 8% perform holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HOLEP) [2]
- Open surgery complications are 78% higher than endoscopic procedures (27.5% vs. 15.5%) in African settings [3]
- Hospital stays are 4 times longer with open surgery (8 days) compared to endourology (2 days) [4]
- Endourology is not widely practiced or non-existent in many African referral centers due to equipment deficits and training gaps [5]
